The Artist

Jaé Joseph is a Caribbean-American creative director and cultural strategist, and the founder behind WanderingOpus—a fragrance house conceived as an evolving archive of scent.

His work is grounded in the belief that fragrance is more than adornment; it is memory made tangible, a vessel for history, identity, and the unseen emotional landscapes that shape how we move through the world.

Foundation

The foundation of WanderingOpus was not formed overnight, but through a seven-year journey of study, research, and disciplined exploration. Joseph immersed himself in the language of perfumery—working closely with raw materials, studying formulation, and apprenticing under a recognized chemist to understand the structural and molecular composition of scent.

What emerged from this process was not simply technical knowledge, but a philosophy: that fragrance, when approached with intention, can function as both narrative and artifact.

Philosophy

This philosophy is deeply informed by his earlier work in contemporary art and curatorial practice. Trained in building immersive, narrative-driven experiences, Joseph began to see parallels between exhibition-making and perfumery—how both rely on sequencing, tension, and emotional resonance.

Where one constructs space, the other constructs time. In his hands, scent becomes an extension of this practice: composed with the same rigor, shaped by the same sensitivity to audience, and designed to unfold in layers, revealing itself gradually.

Birth

WanderingOpus was born from this intersection—where art, science, and memory converge. Each fragrance is developed as a study in presence and permanence, drawing from diasporic histories, ancestral memory, and the emotional architecture of place.

Rather than follow cycles of excess, the house is committed to depth, restraint, and material integrity—creating compositions that are intimate, enduring, and quietly powerful.

A recipient of the James Baldwin Prize, Joseph’s work is guided by a commitment to storytelling, cultural equity, and innovation. Through WanderingOpus, he continues to build a body of work that exists beyond product—establishing a new language of fragrance that is as intellectual as it is sensorial, and as personal as it is universal.
